Born in Philadelphia as a beginner scene painter, Haseltine learned at the University of Pennsylvania and afterward at Harvard University, where he got a degree in 1854. He initially showed his paintings at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He cruised to Europe, studying in Dã¼sseldorf, at that point traveling up the Rhine into Switzerland and Italy.
