Gros, Antoine Jean, France 1771 to 1835 Oil Paintings

Antoine-Jean Gros was born in Paris, France. He turned into an understudy of J.- L. David in 1785 and entering the Acadã©mie in 1787. In 1793 he went to Italy, and he saw the skirmish of Arcole in 1796. In 1796-9, he lived in Milan, where he initially met Napoleon. He painted pictures and sentimental artistic subjects; however, his nearby affiliation made his standing with Napoleon, whose deeds he celebrated in such enormous materials as the Pestiférés de Jaffa and the Bataille des Pyramides.

He displayed his paintings at the Salon (1798-18350 and was made a chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1808. He was chosen for the Institut in 1815 and succeeded David as an educator at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1816. Charles X made him an aristocrat in 1824. During his later years, his Davidian thoughts were increasingly scrutinized, and his unhappiness drove him to end his own life by drowning in the Seine on June 26, 1835.
