Gris, Juan, Spain 1887 to 1927 Oil Paintings
Juan Gris was born in Madrid, Spain. He considered mechanical drawing in Madrid from 1902-04, during which time he contributed paintings to neighborhood periodicals. From 1904-05 he examined painting with the academic craftsman Jose Maria Carbonero. In 1906 he moved to Paris, where he lived for a large portion of the remainder of his life. Gris started to paint intensely in 1910. By 1912 he had built up an individual Cubist style. He turned into an old buddy of Henri Matisse. His best works were painted between 1914-17. Incidentally, these were the years, as we probably are aware from his letters, of his most prominent privations.
