Jean-Edouard Vuillard was born in France in 1868 and died in 1940. He was a famous painter and printmaker, whose work was decorative and expressive. Usually depicting interiors, streets, gardens, and figures, it was marked by delicate execution and gentle humor. In 1884 his father's death was a catalyst that led Vuillard to pursue art. He received a scholarship to the Lycee Condorcet, a Parisian art school. After being there for one year he left, refusing a military career, and joining his beloved friend Roussel. Together they apprenticed at Diogene Maillart's painting studio. Finally in 1887 after three unsuccessful attempts, at age 19 he was accepted into the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. A few years later Vuillard joined the Nabis, a group of painters inspired by the famou Gauguin. He exhibited with them at the Gallery of Le Barc de Boutteville and later on shared a studio with Nabis friends. Around 1898 Vuillard began traveling, he visited many places including Venice, Florence, London, Milan, Spain, Brittany, and Normandy. It was in 1940, at the age of 72, when he died.
