James Gale Tyler was born in Oswego, New York in 1865 and died in 1931. At the age of 15 he moved to the city and trained as a maritime artist. There he developed a style that carried throughout the years of his work. A realist depiction with romantic suggestion and deep hues are what make up the motif of his seascapes. Tyler became a prominent artist who commission list was ever expanding, of which included Harper's Bazaar, and the Literary Digest .
