John Byam Liston Shaw, better known as Byam Shaw, was born in Madras, India in 1872 and died in 1919. He was a British painter, illustrator, designer, and teacher. At the age of 6 he and his family moved back to England and settled in Kensington. After seeing 15 year old Shaw's work, John Everett Millais recommended he attend St. John's Art School. In 1890 Shaw studied at the Royal Academy. Shaw's work covers a varies in medium from oils, to watercolor, ink, and even dyes. His subjects also ranged from theater, mythology, and genre scenes. In 1899 Shaw married the artist velyn Eunice Pyke-Nott, had five children including th actor and director Glen Byam Shaw and the art historian Jim Byam Shaw.
