Scheffer, Ary, Netherlands 1795 to 1858 Oil Paintings
Filter list according to painting color palette:
Ary Scheffer was born in Dordrecht, Netherlands in 1795 and died in 1858. He was a Dutch painter of religous subject matter and French, Dutch, and German genre scenes. At a young age his father died, and his family became poor. His mother, who was also a painter and a daughter of a painter, decided to take him to Paris for a proper education at the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guerin. During that time, the artistic style was Romanticism, but Scheffer did not take to it at all so he developed his own style, which has been referred to as "frigidly classical." Scheffer mostly painted subjects from literature, especially the works of Dante, Byron and Goethe, as well as many scenes from the Bible.
