Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze was born in Germany and emigrated to America in 1825. He got back to Europe on a few events to contemplate. His well-known recorded paintings have been repeated on many occasions, particularly Washington Amusing the Delaware (1851). His famous painting, Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way (1862), is in the Capitol, Washington, DC. Leutze’s paintings are known less for their image quality than for their energetic emotionalism. His craftsmanship immovably rank among the American public iconography.
