Ippolito Caffi was born in Belluno, Italy in 1814 and died at age 52 in 1866. He was an Italian architecture/landscape painter; usually depicting city scenes and historical moments. He studied at the Venice Academy, where he produced his very first painting. He later moved to Rome to build his reputation as an artist. There he wrote his treatise on perspective and studied Roman archaeology. In 1848 he joined revolutionary movements in Venice, but eventually retired to Piedmont. He was commissioned to paint the first Italian Naval engagement, but unfortunately the vessel was destroyed at battle, drowning him along with all of his comrades.
