Jules Bastien-Lepage was born in the village of Damvillers, Meuse of France in 1848 and died just 36 short years later in 1884. Bastien-Lepage was a French naturalist painter. He grew up on a vineyard and was encouraged by his parents to pursue his natural artistic talents. His father was also a painter, and as a child Bastien-Lepage studied under him. At the age of 17 he moved to Paris and was admitted to the École des Beaux-arts. There he worked under the artist, Cabanel. Like a nobel man, he fought when he was needed during the Franco-Prussian war. Once he returned from war, he continue even more passionately his pursuit of the arts. In 1880 he exhibited "Joan Of Arc" at the Royal Academy; this piece is perhaps one of his most famous. Before his death he was fortunate to travel to Italy. Due to an illness he died at the young age of 36.
