Lodewijk Frederik Hendrik Apol, better known as Louis Apol, was born in the Netherlands in 1850 and died in 1936. He was a Dutch landscape painter, specializing in winter landscapes. At a very early age, Apol's father recognized his talent in the arts and paid for private lessons for him. His teachers consisted of J.F. Hoppenbrouwers and P.F. Stortenbeker. At the age of 18, the Dutch King Willem the III bestwed a scholarship to him. Apol went on to be one of the most oustanding representatives of the Haagse School.
