Edwin Austin Abbey was born in 1852 in Philidelphia, Pennsylvania and died in 1911. Known as an American artist, illustrator, and painter. A catalyst for the golden age of illustration, his work highlights theatrical plays and historical events. As a young man, he studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where shortly after he began illustrating for renowned magazines like Harper's Weekly and Scribner's. In 1878 Abbey moved to England where he grew in stature and talent. To keep his United States citizenship, he declined an offer of knighthood in 1907. His commissions included those from Buckingham Palace, Boston Public Library, and the State Capitol of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately in 1911 he became sick with cancer leaving his work in Harrisburg, PA unfinished, later to be completed by another artist.
