Arthur Bowen Davies was born in Utica, New York on September 26, 1863 and died October 24, 1928. Davies was an American avant-garde artist who studied at the Chicago Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York. His paintings included figures that were reputedly celestial, mystical, and ethereal. He helped revolutionize American art by the introduction of modernism to the public eye.
